What should I expect at my 1st Guard drill?

Before you can become a member to the TNSG you must attend at least 1 drill and complete all the proper paper work. (2 drills for Non-Prior)  There are 8 different forms (all Microsoft Word Doc.)

On your first drill, simply come dressed in your civilian clothes, or if you are in possession of standard military BDU’s, you may wear that. The drill will be held at our HQ bldg. 1724 NSA Millington. There will be training and orientation conducted that day.  During the orientation session, everything will be explained to you and any questions you might have will be answered at this time.  If you have not completed your forms, there will be a session to complete your applications and all paper work.  If you join the guard, you will need a copy of your DD 214, NGB 33 or other discharge documents if prior service - must show their discharge status and or your honorable discharge certificate.

If you have no prior military experience, you will need to bring copies of a high school (GED) and or college degrees/transcripts, professional licenses - medical, veterinary, EMT, attorneys, engineers, vocational training certificates or ecumenical endorsements/documents for chaplains etc.  We will need a copy of a valid TN drivers license.  If you are a non-prior, please bring a resume or work history. ( required if applying for a warrant officer slot).  In joining the TNSG you must have patience, as it could take 2 to 4 months.  Your paper work will be sent to HQ in Nashville and the decision about your membership will be made there.  Only 25% of the TNSG membership can be non-prior personnel.  It is extremely important that you list everything you have done that might be useful to your membership and or job in the TNSG.

You should have a map provided by email on how to get to the HQs once on base.  If you are retired and have the proper identification you should be able to drive on the base.  If not, your name will be left at the guard gate, and you must have a current driver’s license, proof of insurance, and a current vehicle registration to drive on the base.  You should tell the guard that you are here for the Tennessee State Guard Drill.

We look forward to seeing you at this special drill.  I can be reached at 901-794-3032 at ext. 101 anytime as my office phone rings at home.  If I am not in, please leave me a message.  My cell phone is 901-378-2347. Thank you for your consideration. E-mail:  [email protected]

P.S.  For those of you who have already applied for membership, please be patient.  Your paper work is being reviewed at HQ’s and a decision will be forth coming.  It is possible that some of you will need more documentation to verify certain things on your application.
